Friends with drug addiction, how did you actually help them?

Has anyone successfully helped a friend who was using drugs? Not judgment, but practical steps, what did you say or do that made a difference? Did they listen to you? Did you involve their family, rehab, or something else? Also, how did you protect your own mental health without abandoning them? Please share only genuine personal experiences.

I was the friend who needed help, not the one giving it. For years I pushed everyone away until one friend did something different. He stopped lecturing me and started just showing up. He brought me food, sat with me in silence, and told me he would drive me anywhere I wanted to go when I was ready. That small consistent presence broke through my isolation. Eventually I asked him to take me to rehab. He saved my life not by fixing me but by staying close without enabling me. Now I try to do the same for others.
